You Are What You Eat Pt.1: Honey


As the old adage goes: You are what you eat. Such a saying has been around for a long time and has never been more true especially in the world of today in regards to the vast options we have in regards to what we can choose to consume. This is a new series of blog posts is here to help inform those out there that sometimes to enhance one's life can start with something as simple as what one eats. Like always: this blog is meant to help in regards to daily life and isn't an alternative means to attempt to treat serious underlying health conditions and doing such would be to do so at your own risks. So without further ado, onto the following info ahead.

When you think of Honey, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For some, it is an alternative to things like sugar when it comes to sweetening their beverages like tea or an alternative to buttering bread. For others: it is a very handy cooking ingredient in old cooking recipes to make things like sweets or delights for the kids that isn't as harmful as traditional candies. Regardless of how you view it, it may be a shock to some out there that this sweet tasting substance actually holds some health benefits in it. Depending on the means wished to be achieved, honey doesn't always have to be consumed in order to gain it's unique benefits. Keep in mind: These generally apply to raw honey and not your standardized commercial honey.

Cough Suppressant: In a study done in The Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, a test was conducted on over 100 children that had colds using a standard cough medicine versus Buckwheat Honey. In the studies conducted, the honey was shown to be a better aid in suppressing coughs and also aiding in nighttime sleep. This was due to the layer of film it created upon the throat as it made the area less irritable which may be due to it's antibacterial properties as well. However, it is advised to be careful in giving children under a certain age raw honey due to the increased risk of Botulism.

Rich Source of Antioxidants: Much like other foods out there, honey is also an excellent source of antioxidants. This in turn can be good for the body as antioxidants tend to help repair the damage sustained from what are known as free radicals. Free radicals are what contributes to certain factors like the aging process as well as certain chronic diseases and illnesses that affect some of us in our daily lives. To be more precises, honey contains what is known as Polyphenols, which is useful in the prevention of Heart Disease.

Antibacterial/Anti-fungal Properties: As mentioned in the cough suppressant tidbit, one unique property of Honey is that it has it's own Antibacterial property, but also anti-fungal properties as well . This is in part due to the chemical make up of the honey being similar to that of hydrogen peroxide and thus making it a natural antiseptic. In regards to consumption to treat certain afflictions, these properties make it useful in dealing with issues like colds and flu session. However, in regards to topical applications: access to certain kinds of honey is generally recommended.
